Boss checks: River Master, Feng Ruzhi, Taiping Mausoleum
Boss fights in Where Winds Meet are mechanic checks built on the Deflect loop. Three fights cover almost every problem players hit: a projectile that looks unblockable but is not, a hard timer, and a challenge mode that removes the safety net.

- If the Qi bar will not move, a mechanic is blocking it
Can you deflect the River Master's water cannon?
Yes. The River Master's (河伯) water cannon is a deflectable projectile, even though it reads as an area attack. That single fact turns the fight from a survival check into a Qi-drain check: treat the cannon as a red-glint attack and Deflect it, and the boss becomes far easier than its reputation suggests.
The River Master is the story boss tied to the Roaring Sands region, which opens globally on 11 December 2026. Players meeting the fight for the first time should expect the standard structure: a damage phase, a projectile phase, and an Exhausted window you are meant to cash in on with an Execute. The projectile phase is where most deaths happen, and the fix is the combat loop habit of reading the attack rather than reacting to its size.
How does the Feng Ruzhi orb phase work?
Feng Ruzhi (封如芝) is a world boss with a timed orb mechanic. The orb phase gives you roughly 15 seconds to handle the orb before the fight punishes you. The design is a coordination check: it forces you to break your damage rotation and solve a shared object instead of tunnel-visioning the boss.
| Problem | What players do | What actually works |
|---|---|---|
| Timer expires | Keep attacking the boss | Drop the boss and deal with the orb first — the timer is the threat, not the health bar |
| Orb ignored by the group | Assume someone else has it | Assign the orb before the phase starts, not during it |
| Qi bar stalls | Keep Deflecting the same pattern | Stop: a stalled bar means a phase gate, not a Deflect failure |
Feng Ruzhi is the clean example of the rule that matters across every boss in the game: if the Qi bar will not move, the fight is asking you to solve something else. Continuing to attack is the most common way to lose a world boss with a full health bar.
What is Taiping Mausoleum?
Taiping Mausoleum (太平陵) is the challenge mode: an instanced fight tuned above the story difficulty, where the safety net is thinner and the mechanics punish harder. It is the place to test whether your build is actually finished, because it removes the open-world advantages of terrain and allies.
| Bring | Why |
|---|---|
| A settled gear chain | Challenge damage assumes your Gear Echo through Modulating path is done |
| One sustain Inner Way | Vital Leech (归燕经) converts Executes into healing |
| One control Mystic Skill | Adds and phase transitions are where challenge mode kills you — see Mystic Skills |
| The exact tier date of your build | A T0 claim from six months ago is not a build recommendation |
Why does the Qi bar refuse to move?
Three reasons, in order of likelihood:
- A shield or add is active. The boss is invulnerable to Qi damage until the shield breaks or the add dies.
- It is a phase transition. Qi damage resumes after the transition animation, not during it.
- You are Deflecting the wrong attacks. Gold-glint attacks do not drain Qi no matter how well timed.
The third one is a habit problem and the first two are knowledge problems. The combat page covers the habit; this page covers the two boss mechanics worth memorizing.
Which bosses are not bosses yet?
Hutuo arrives on 13 November 2026 and Roaring Sands on 11 December 2026, and each region brings its own set of encounters. This page only documents fights with mechanics confirmed in our records. When a new region lands, the standard checks still apply: deflectable projectiles, timed objects, and stalled Qi bars.
What should I change after dying three times?
- Switch one Mystic Skill, not your whole build — usually to control or mobility.
- Watch the Qi bar for one full phase without attacking at all.
- If a timer exists, assign it to a player before the pull.
- Only then change gear, and only within the gear chain order.
